Week 2: Space: The Final Frontier

Week 2: Space: The Final Frontier

2. What was the big question?

How did the Space Race shape our understanding of space and technology?
What are the major milestones in human space exploration?
How have different people contributed to space science?

3. What did you learn in Thursday’s discussion?

Size of the Earth: Shape of the potato - Greek astronomer measures shadow and comes up with 7.2 degrees
Last time an American was on the moon was 1972. Timeline:

1957 Russia successfully launches satellite
1961 Yuri Gagarin orbits earth (April)
1961 Alan Shepard into space (may) no orbit
1968 Apollo missions orbit moon
1969 Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin land
December 1972 last time on the moon 0 women have been on the moon

Women were preferred to go on the moon because...
Lighter
Shorter
Consumed less food Jerrie Cobb
Over 10,000 hours as a pilot
Double what john Glenn had
NASA required jet engine training
Only available vis military
Essentially grounded women Return to the moon in 2019
 • VP Pence announced October 5th 2017 Water on the moon allowing for a base to be constructed (south pole) Mars by 2030

New capsule and launch system 2018
Crew on international space station (ISS)
Psychological and physiological testing occurring (500-day mission)

USA is the only country to land on the moon

WHY MARS
Very similar to earth
Day – night cycle
Evidence of past water and life
Safe surface area of land
Thin atmosphere
Manageable distance away
Training for this done in henry mountains (UTAH)

 4. Read the online textbook, chapter 5:
https://pressbooks.uiowa.edu/methodsii/chapter/earth/

1. What did you learn?

I learned that the Space Race pushed both the U.S. and the Soviet Union to achieve incredible firsts in space exploration, from satellites to humans in orbit. It eventually led to the U.S. landing the first astronauts on the Moon in 1969.

2. What was most helpful?

I think it was the most helpful when going over the content in class that was written in the book helped me understand and get better notes and understanding on what was written in the chapter.

3. What do you need more information on?

I think I will just have to study this chapter a little bit more because space is always a hard topic for me to fully comprehend and understand.
