Week 1: Sun, Earth & Moon

 How do the phases of the moon occur? 

As the Moon orbits the Earth, different amounts of this sunlit part are visible from our planet, creating the phases of the Moon. 

What causes the seasons? 

Seasons are caused by the Earth's axis being tilted, which creates different areas of the Earth to be tilted towards the sun at different times of the year, changing the seasons. 

What causes a lunar eclipse? 

A lunar eclipse happens when Earth crosses between the Sun and the Moon, causing a shadow of earth to be on the Moon. 

1. What did you do in the lab today? 

Heliocentrism: The theory that the Sun is at the center of the solar system. 

Geocentrism: The theory that Earth is at the center of the solar system. 

Copernicus: founder of the theory that the sun is the center 

The Catholic church only believed in Geocentrism.

Its not how close the sunlight is, but rather how much direct sunlight we receive. 

Tropic of Cancer: upper line above the equator 

Equator: a line in the middle of the Earth 

Tropic of Capricorn: Lower line below the equator 

Earth is always tilted at a 23.5-degree angle 


2. What is the Big Question?

Is the Earth or the Sun at the center of the Solar System? 

How do the Sun, Earth, and Moon interact? 

How can the Sun’s position create shadows, eclipses, and equinoxes? 

3. What did you learn in Thursday’s discussion? 

Geocentric: earth centered 

Heliocentric: sun centered  

Copernicus and Galileo: discovered heliocentrism 

Plane of the Ecliptic: where the sun and planets where all created, they are all aligned  apart from Pluto  

Like a giant, flat, imaginary disc in space that contains the Earth's orbit around the Sun 

 

If you are above the equator, your shadow always points north  

If you are below the equator, your shadow always points south 

 

Clouds, Moon, Sun, Pluto, Stars 

 

 

Equator and the tropic lines: cancer/ above & Capricorn / below  

Equinox: Equal day and equal night for everyone of earth (12/12) 

Solstice: winter in Capricorn December 21  & summer in cancer June 21 

 

Aphelion: farthest from the sun (around July 5) 

Perihelion: closest to the sun (around January 4) 

 

Arctic: Bear 

Antarctic: No Bear

What did you learn? 

I learnt about the way the seasons work and how the moon and sun affect Earth's seasons, as well as how sunlight creates the seasons. 

2) What was most helpful?

The videos and the key ideas within the textbook helped me understand and focus on the main parts that I should fully understand. 

3) What do you need more information on? 

The phases of the moon and a simpler understanding.
